Nissan Patrol gets new 7-speed automatic, more power for 2018

The current-generation Nissan Patrol Royale has been in the market for quite some time now. For 2018 however, the venerable full-sized SUV gets a healthy power bump this year and is possibly the most potent vehicle Nissan Philippines offers, bar the GT-R.

Under the hood, 2018 Patrol Royale is fitted with a new VK56VD 5.6-liter, naturally-aspirated V8 engine, it gains direct injection and Variable Valve Event and Lift System. The result is an impressive 400 PS and a stump-pulling 560 Nm of torque. A significant bump from the old VK56DE which only put out 320 PS and 533 Nm.
It sends power to all four wheels via a permanent four-wheel drive system. Being a traditional SUV, the four-wheel-drive system has a 4-Low and a 4-High mode which defaults to Auto. Just as significant is the addition of the new seven-speed automatic transmission, replacing the old five-speed unit.

To distinguish the 2018 models from the pre-facelift variants, it pays to take a closer look at the front fascia. Immediately noticeable is the more angular bumper design with a solid, defined character line running across it. It is then complemented by a pair of new fog lights, which are larger than before. Also new is the grill, employing an 'egg-crate' look as opposed to the honeycomb design of last year's Patrol.
Other changes to the exterior are the new LED headlights with a distinct light signature. The tail lights get an updated look too, with bright red LED lighting. Plus, the 20-inch alloy wheels get a new, multi-spoke design. As for the rest of the vehicle, it carries over unchanged. To make the 5.1-meter long SUV that bit easier to maneuver, the 2018 Patrol Royale comes standard with an Around View Monitor, serving as an extra pair of eyes for the driver thanks to the additional cameras.

As for the cabin, there are some trim color changes, as well as an updated infotainment system. It now boasts an 8-inch touchscreen with the sound being channeled via a Bose premium audio system with a 13-speaker system. Both front seats get power adjustability with the driver's side coming with a memory function. Given its size, it comes as no surprise that it has seating for eight. Second-row passengers are treated to headrest-mounted display screens on each side.
